About the project
Welcome to the official site of the national reserve of the Tigrovaja Balka.

Here you will find information on the national reserve, photographs, articles and reports about the completed works on the restoration of the national reserve. Technical assistance was offered within the framework of the project on the preservation of Buchar`s Deer of the national park of the Tiger Wildlife Sanctuary. Public information and awareness campaigns were developed and conducted, including children’s ecological camps, living in the neighborhoods of the national reserve. In 2004 steps were undertaken to try to recover the complex ecosystem of Tiger Wildlife Sanctuary - in particular, haloxylon fields were planted in surrounding main areas of typha desert - where they grew for some time, but were later destroyed by human activity.

You live forever, Forest ...
"Live forever, the national park,
in yours primordial beauty,
to live for the people, whom you
never stopped to be needed"
- G.N.SAPOZHNIKOV

"Many people will probably be surprised, hearing that there is a jungle in Tajikistan. The word "jungle" comes from Indian word "jangal". So called in India the thick non climbable bamboo and other wooden-bushes thicket with gigantic grass and lianas on the coast and the delta of the rivers. They very much look like the jungle thickets in the flood lands of the rivers of the Central Asia the "tugay".

Turan Tiger
In the past the Turan Tiger was found only in a small part of South-western of Tajikistan. In the 1930s the area of the tiger distribution occupied the lower flow of Pyanj, Vakhsh and probably Kafirnihon rivers. It was distributed along the valley of Pyandzh district to Chubek, in the lower parts in Kyzylsu, Yasysu and sometimes on lower flow of Pyanj. In Vakhsh it was found down to the lower parts of the river flow. The tiger was not in Gissar valley for a long time. The last specimen being killed by chance in Rohat MTS district in 1938. In the 1950s the sightings was greatly reduced. The last footprints and the dead body of the last fallen predator were seen in the summer of 1954 in the Tigrovaja Balka (Tiger Wildlife Sanctuary).

Physic-geographical particularities of the national reservoir
The climatic conditions in the region of the Tigrovaja Balka can be characterized as following: a long hot summer, short winter, a wide range of daily temperature (from day to night) and exposed and sparse setting, falling to the cold season of the year. The dusty south-western winds -"Afghans" are not uncommon in the Tigrovaja Balka

The average annual temperature is between +16C to +17C. The monthly average temperature in the coldest month of January is +1C to +2C. However, sometimes air temperature can drop to -8C to -10C. Precipitation is particularly in the cold period, falling as rain and a wet snow. This constitutes 70% to 75% of the annual amount or 100-180 mm. The snow quickly melts and does not form flat snow cover. The average temperature in July, the warmest month, is around 40C, however, the absolute maximum can reach as much as 55C.

Eco-patriot
If I place a globe for you all to look at, then I show you the only place in the whole world with typha flooded landscape with adjoining deserts of Kashka-Kum and Kara-Dum in 53 thousand hectares – it is a the Tiger Wildlife Sanctuary. After the breakup of the USSR the provision of systems of energy resources to all regions of Tajikistan adjusted and developed very slowly. In the south the the Tigrovaja Balka, a unique national park became a source of wood. Unique tree species, such as Turanga (Populus pruinosa) and other wood-bush species were destroyed. There was a stark choice for life and survival- either the families will starve as there is nothing for heating, i.e. no coal, not enough other fossil fuel energy, expensive solar batteries and expensive other alternative sources of energy. Or people will poach, cut the field and remove what wood fuel they could find. The Government needed to make hard and wise decisions on how to regulate this difficult dilemma.

The “TIGROVAJA BALKA” (Tiger Wildlife Sanctuary) in Tajikistan
The Tigrovaja Balka (Tiger Wildlife Sanctuary) in Tajikistan is the most significant and unique environmental territory in Central Asia. This area represents a rare complex of tugai (called Tugay in local language, which is reedmace, rushes, bushes, trees and associated flora and fauna) eco- system and typical for riparian woodland (or Typha)

rare and specifically endemic and unique species of fauna and flora. The reserve is famous as the last sighting of the Turan`s Tiger was registered there in 1958. There are riparian woodlands in the whole Khatlon region - in narrow strips or small clumps in the areas of thicketed field of the flood lands, along the rivers shores. But the typhus of the Tigrovaja Balka Wildlife Sanctuary covers larger areas and as such creates Typha jungle. These large areas of Typha are significant in their size and the most touched by anthrop generic influence. They are located on confluence of and between the Rivers Vakhsh and Pyanj, which create the conditions for their significant size and natural borders and barriers for their safety from human activities as well.
